** UPDATED 09-04-2007 **: Some Thoughts on Evo 2007... NOW WITH PHOTOS!

#1

Here’s my first post on my thoughts on Evo, addressing some complaints. I’ll update this thread as soon as I get my photos up and as soon as I write my second post.

I also did want to apologize for not getting interviews up for all 8 games on Sunday. It turned out much more difficult than I had originaly believed, so I only managed to finish the games that were played on Friday.

Also, due to technical difficulties, a video I had made to be played before the Choi vs. Wong event never got played. It’s short, but there’s a couple of priceless shots in there (Wong talking shit is always fun). So here’s a link to it so you can check it out if you want.

James!!! SRK owes you so much if we’re to try to pay you back in terms of money, you’d be buying a new house.

I love the vid!

JChensor your right about the whole unfortunate situations of 1 game and making excuses. Sometimes you just have to swallow it up and do better next time. Stuff happens.

The hype video is too good. Choi is officially the greatest smack talker and he doesn’t even have to say a word!!!

what’s really good?

James, thank you so much for all of your efforts!

However, 1-game IS a poor format that should be avoided whenever possible. Simply put, the more games there are, the more consistent the results will be. You mention Japan, but guess what…their tournaments ARE random as hell! They just hold a lot more of them than we do, so overall it evens out and isn’t so bad.

And the same thing applies to the playoffs in baseball, football, college basketball, etc. This has been an area of statistical analysis in recent years, and the results mostly back up Billy Beane’s statement in the book Moneyball - it really is largely “fucking luck”!

In the interest of creating drama and upsets, we may eventually have to switch to this format if we want Evo to become mainstream, because it’s certainly done that elsewhere. But let’s not pretend it’s a good system for the players.

That is my ONLY complaint with this Evo, though…probably the best one ever, IMO, and it will only go up from here. Hats off to all of you!!!

Yeah, I’m not saying it’s a better system than what we do now nor am I saying that it’s a good system period. I’m just saying that it happens, it exists elsewhere, and people have dealt with it since the existence of competitive sports. So if it happens at Evo, learn to accept it and don’t use it as a scapegoat for everything. Of course I’d prefer more than one game as well. That’s why I like the NBA playoffs more than NCAA March Madness. But if it comes down to 1-game, it doesn’t automatically ruin your chances of winning. If you are the better player, you should still come out on top, as Ken, Nuki, and BAS proved.

James, your interview vids made evo soooo much better. You are a gentleman and a scholar! haha. Anyway It was nice to meet you in person, I wish you wouldn’t have been so busy so you could have chilled with us. But still very cool.

Thanks, sir. The interviews were very much a team effort. Mrwizard, Tom Cannon, and Tony Cannon did a great job making sure everyone who qualified came ot the back to be interviewed (though I did miss out on two people). They also did an awesome job making sure they were played properly and smoothly on the big screen. A huge thanks goes to Chris Li for doing such a great job on the interviews themselves. And super bonus thanks go to Ryan “Fubarduck” Harvey and Nick “NKI” Inabnit for helping translate for the Japanese players. Any part of those not happening meant no interviews.

Next year, I’ll try to see if I can spend more time hanging out and chilling, though. Hopefully I’ll be able to kick it with people from time to time next year!
