Where to get a good HDMI > VGA/RCA transcoder?

#1

As per title, I’m looking to hook my PS3 up to an arcade monitor. Since VDigi discontinued this http://www.vdigi.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=9&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=19&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53 product, I’m looking for something that will do the same thing.

Anyone know where to get one that actually does the job? The ones on Amazon are getting very poor reviews, and I bought a hdmi > VGA/ RCA cable but it doesn’t work.

that should work…

Reading the reviews, it appears it does not work.

But thanks for the idea on what to look for. Maybe a similar product will actually work!

I actually own the Mayflash version of the product and it works fine for me on the PS3 with an HD monitor. The colors are a bit washed out (compared to HDMI), but it is definitely tolerable and better than expected considering the price.

If I recall correctly, there is something called HDFury which should convert HDMI to VGA. I would assume the picture quality is much better, but albeit the solution is also much pricier.

What kind of arcade monitor? There’s no need for a transcoder when the PS3 already outputs rgb and vga through it’s analog a/v port. I’ve made a few ps1/ps2/ps3 rgb cables to work on a couple of various RGB and VGA monitors. RGB cables are easy to find on eBay, you just gotta adapt the connector to work in your application.

It’s a hi-res (480p, d-sub 15 input) arcade monitor.

Cool. All it involves is chopping the scart end off of a ps3 scart cable and the replacing it with a vga connector from Radio Shack or buying a scart to vga adapter via eBay. Also, you gotta change the PS3’s setting to RGB/Scart and set it to 480p mode.

I might have a cable to give you that’s ready for use. $8 shipped. Lemme check what’s left.

Does such a cable also have RCA audio out?

#10

Yeah it does. This was in my Flickr. I know this actually cable is still in my possession (saw it during my move). I’ll let you know in some hours.

I’m gonna post this here instead of PM, since it’s helpful to many.

The cable I listed above will not work well with most display since the monitor I tested on years ago (SONY GVM-2020*)* has ‘video amp’ and ‘sync-on-green’ buttons on the back panel which almost all monitors don’t have, allowing me to make it work. The cheapest and best route is to buy a ps2/ps3 RGB scart cable and a scart to vga adpter off of eBay because, the cable I was gonna give you produces a picture that’s too dark and blurry because it doesn’t have 220uf caps on the RGB lines and a sync stripper like a proper scart cable.

Proof that the scart to vga concept works are theses images I took today…

It’s a standard ps2 scart cable (plastic cover removed to help me figure out what line is what) and a female scart connector that I wired up to a vga connector (homemade scart to vga). The monitor is a Sony GDM FW900.

I’m also throwing a few of my consoles into my arcade cabinet.

Yes, It should all work. Could also the hack the coupler to make the converter setup small and all inclusive.

Also works on my PVM-20M4U that can’t to VGA
